Research and Exchange Opportunities

The Urban Systems Lab is a research center at The New School university in New York City, homed at the Schools for Public Engagement. We welcome collaboration and partnerships with research institutions and groups, however we invite you to please review the information below before contacting us about joining the Lab.

PhD Candidates and Researchers without a Terminal Degree

Researchers and scholars without a PhD or terminal degree must be enrolled in a PhD program at The New School in order to join the Lab. Many Lab members are enrolled in the Public and Urban Policy program at the Milano School of Policy, Management and Environment. The program supports scholarly research and thinking on pressing issues of policy, design, and local and global development. The deadline for applications is January 15 of each year. Please contact the program coordinator for any questions about enrollment or your application. Following your acceptance into the PhD program, please reach out to us to discuss opportunities.

Visiting Scholars

If you are currently a faculty member or researcher at another institution, and that has completed a PhD or Masters, we occasionally host visiting scholars to engage with and compliment ongoing research at the Lab. As well as support original research on urban resilience; climate change adaptation and nature-based solutions; urban land use planning; social equity and environmental justice; urban biodiversity and ecosystem services; data visualization and urban data science. Please reach out to us to discuss opportunities.


Research Assistants

The Urban Systems Lab provides research assistantships to support ongoing research projects and substantive academic tasks. There are currently no openings at this time, but we encourage The New School graduate students to reach out with a specific proposal. Undergraduate Student Opportunities

The USL provides undergraduate students assistantships and opportunities that support the Lab’s ongoing research efforts and administrative tasks. We are currently accepting applications from New School students who have Federal Work Study, and have interest and experience in working with the Lab’s interdisciplinary research team.
